Quick answer: DTF (direct-to-film) printing prints your design onto a special film, which is then transferred to the garment with heat. Choose DTF when you want to print on cotton, polyester, blends or other fabrics, or when you want a bold, durable design. At Digital Prints On T-Shirts, we offer DTF printing with no minimum order, so you can start with one shirt.
How does DTF printing work?
DTF printing separates the printing step from the garment. The process looks like this:
- Printing on film: your design is printed in full color onto a special PET film.
- Adhesive powder: a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and cured.
- Heat transfer: the film is placed on the garment and pressed with heat.
- Peel: the film is peeled away, leaving the design bonded to the fabric.
What are the advantages of DTF printing?
- Works on many fabrics: cotton, polyester, blends and more.
- Bold, vibrant colors: designs stay sharp, including on dark garments.
- Durable: the transfer bonds well to the fabric and holds up with proper care.
- No minimum order: ideal for single shirts, small batches and custom gifts.
- Full-color designs: gradients and complex artwork are possible without extra color charges.
When should you choose DTF printing?
- Your garment is polyester or a blend and not suitable for DTG.
- You want a bold graphic or logo that stands out on any color of shirt.
- You are printing on different fabric types in the same order.
- You need a small or one-off order without setup costs per color.
When is DTF not the best choice?
If you want an ultra-soft feel and photo-realistic detail on a 100% cotton shirt, DTG printing is usually a better fit. For all-over designs on light-colored polyester, such as jerseys and sportswear, sublimation is the best option.
DTF vs DTG vs sublimation
| Method | Best for | Fabric | Feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | Bold graphics on varied fabrics | Cotton, polyester, blends | Slightly raised layer |
| DTG | Photos and detailed art | 100% cotton or high-cotton | Very soft |
| Sublimation | All-over designs, jerseys | Light-colored polyester | No added layer |

How do I care for a DTF-printed T-shirt?
- Washing: turn the shirt inside out and wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle.
- Drying: air-dry away from direct sunlight to prevent premature fading.
- Ironing: avoid ironing directly over the printed design.
How to prepare your design for DTF printing
Send a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background or a vector file. Make sure the artwork is sized for the print area and that fine details are sharp. If you are unsure about your file, send it to us and we will review it before printing.

Frequently asked questions
What does DTF stand for?
DTF stands for direct-to-film. The design is printed on a film first and then transferred to the garment with heat.
Can DTF print on polyester?
Yes. DTF works on cotton, polyester and blends, which makes it one of the most versatile printing methods.
Is DTF good for small orders?
Yes. DTF does not require screens or per-color setup, so it is excellent for single shirts and small batches. We have no minimum order.
Does DTF printing last?
With proper care, DTF prints last through many washes. Wash inside out in cold water and air-dry to keep the design looking its best.
Is DTF better than DTG?
Neither is better in every case. DTF is more versatile across fabrics, while DTG is softer and excellent for detailed art on cotton.
