Cotton, polyester and blend fabric samples for DTG, DTF and sublimation printing

Best Fabrics for DTG, DTF and Sublimation Printing

Quick answer: DTG works best on 100% cotton or high-cotton blends. DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends and many other fabrics. Sublimation works only on polyester or polyester-coated items, and gives the best results on light-colored fabrics. At Digital Prints On T-Shirts, we offer all three methods with no minimum order, so we can match the printing method to your fabric.

Why does fabric matter for custom printing?

Each printing method works in a different way. DTG ink absorbs into natural fibers, DTF uses an adhesive film that bonds to the surface, and sublimation turns ink into a gas that bonds with polyester fibers. Choosing the right fabric for your method gives you sharper colors, a better feel and a print that lasts longer.

Best fabrics for DTG printing

DTG works best on 100% cotton and high-cotton blends, because water-based ink bonds naturally with cotton fibers. This is the best option for photos and detailed artwork. Learn more in our guide What Is DTG Printing?

  • Best: 100% cotton, ring-spun cotton, high-cotton blends
  • Not recommended: 100% polyester and low-cotton blends

Best fabrics for DTF printing

DTF is the most versatile method because the design is printed on film and heat-pressed onto the garment. It works on cotton, polyester, blends and many other fabrics. If your garment is not suitable for DTG, DTF is usually the best alternative. Learn more in What Is DTF Printing?

  • Best: cotton, polyester, cotton-polyester blends
  • Also works on: many other fabric types, depending on heat tolerance

Best fabrics for sublimation printing

Sublimation bonds with polyester fibers, so it needs polyester or polyester-coated materials. It gives the best results on white or light-colored fabrics, because the ink becomes part of the fabric and does not cover dark colors. It is ideal for jerseys, sportswear and all-over designs, like our custom baseball jerseys.

  • Best: light-colored, 100% polyester garments
  • Not recommended: 100% cotton and dark-colored fabrics

  • Light polyester jerseys and sportswear with all-over designs: sublimation.

How do I care for my printed garment?

Regardless of fabric and method, turn the garment inside out, wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle, air-dry it away from direct sunlight and avoid ironing directly over the printed area.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fabric for custom T-shirt printing?

For DTG, 100% cotton is the best fabric. For DTF, cotton, polyester and blends all work well. For sublimation, light-colored polyester is the best choice.

Can you print DTG on polyester?

DTG is not recommended on 100% polyester, because the water-based ink bonds best with cotton fibers. DTF is usually a better choice for polyester.

Can you use sublimation on cotton?

Sublimation does not work well on cotton, because the ink needs polyester fibers to bond. For cotton, choose DTG or DTF.

What is the best printing method for cotton-polyester blends?

DTF is usually the best option for blends, since it bonds well to mixed fabrics. DTG can work on high-cotton blends.

Can I print on dark garments?

Yes. DTG and DTF both work on dark garments. Sublimation is best on white or light-colored polyester.
